Prof. Ashish Ghosh is currently leading the International Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar, as its Director. Starting as an electronic engineer (1983-1987), Prof. Ashish Ghosh transitioned to computer science during his master's program (1987-1989) and finally to Artificial Intelligence (AI) during PhD (1993). Completing postdoctoral research in Japan (1995-1996), he joined the faculty at ISI (1997) and is now an HAG Professor, contributing immensely to the fields of AI, machine learning, image/video analysis, and data science. He has already published more than 300 research articles, 10 patents, 2 textbooks, 6 edited books, and 8 conference proceedings on these subjects and has an H-index of 53. He has supervised 15 PhD students, 56 master's students and numerous research interns. He has been on the list of the World's top 2% of scientists in AI and image processing of the Stanford University since 2020. For his pioneering contribution in computational intelligence and image analysis, he earned the Young Scientist award from the Indian Science Congress Association (1992), the Young Scientist Medal from INSA (1995), and the Young Associateship of the Indian Academy of Sciences (1997). He is a Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (WAST, 2015), the National Academy of Sciences (NASI, 2019), the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR, 2020), the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAAI, 2022), and the Academy of the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (AIIA, 2024). He received the AI Exploration Award from the NAAI Academy of Science in 2025. He visited various Universities/Academic Institutes in connection with conducting collaborative research/projects and delivering lectures in different countries, including Australia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. He served as a plenary/keynote speaker at many international conferences in India and abroad. To upgrade and nurture the engineering community, he disseminated seminar lectures and conducted several workshops/short-term courses in different parts of India on upcoming topics of AI, machine learning, image & video analysis, and data science. As PI and Co-PI, he completed eighteen projects of national and international importance, funded by the Government of India, the European Commission, and the Indo-Italy and Indo-US forums for Science & Technology. He is a member of the founding team that established the National Centre for Soft Computing Research at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, in 2004, with funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, and that has been recognized as an associate institute of ISI. He acted as the in-charge of this centre for ten years from 2009-2019. He also served as the Head of the well-known Machine Intelligence Unit of ISI during 2013-2014 and 2019-2021. He served as the Project Director of Technology Innovation Hub on Data Science at ISI from 2020-2023. He is a member of the Research & Technical/Project Advisory Committee of many Academic organisations, Government Agencies and SEBI (Mumbai, India), and is nominated to the Academic Council of Banasthali Vidyapith as an eminent educationist. He led the Data Science Research consortium project as the Theme Coordinator to manage a number of projects assigned to different reputed Indian Institutes under the ICPS program of DST, and is the Principal Investigator of the Technical Innovation Hub on Data Science established at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, with funding of 100 crores under a National Mission. He is acting/acted as an Associate Editor of several international journals, like IEEE JSTAR, IEEE Open Journal of Computer Society, Neural Networks, IET Journal of Computer Vision, CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology (published from IET), Springer-Nature Computer Science (SNCS), Sadhana, Journal of Banking and Financial Technology, Artificial Intelligence Science and Engineering, a Series Editor of Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS), Springer-Nature. For his excellent service to IEEE, he received IEEE-GRSS Regional Leader Award, 2019. He is the India-Liasson and AdCom member of IEEE GRSS (Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society) and is acting as the VP of Educational Activities and a member of the Governing Body of APNNS (Asia Pacific Neural Network Society). He is Acting as a Member Academic Advisory Council, International Management Institute. He serves/served as the general chair/program of many domestic and international conferences.
