CURRENT AREAS OF RESEARCH:

 i)    Regional approach to human genome diversity in India

ii)   Genetic polymorphism and disease association
We are trying to understand the genomic diversity and peopling of different regions of India in the light of ethno-historic and linguistic backgrounds. We have already analysed molecular genetic data on 40 different endogamous groups of Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya using autosomal DNA markers, Y-SNPs and STRs and mtDNA HVSI and HVSII. Currently, we are focussing our attention in understanding genomic diversity among the Austro-Asiatic language speakers of India which include more than 30 tribal populations. We plan to to extend our studies to other regions of the Indian subcontinent with the objective of comprehensive potrayal of the genetic history of this subcontinent vis-a-vis other global regions. Our ultimate endeavour is to use this genetic database for the purpose of understanding the association between genetic polymorphisms and diseases.

ONGOING PROJECTS:

 i)    A Molecular Genetic Study of Couples with Recurrent Spontaneous Abortions

ii)  Screening and validation of known susceptibility genes implicated different complex disorders among the Indian populations

iii)  Selection in G6PD deficiency genes

iv)  Status of Austro-Asiatic Tribes in the Peopling of India: Genomic Footprints in the Light of Ethno-Historic and Linguistic Backgrounds

 v)  DNA Polymorphisms in the Caste and Tribal Populations of Andhra Pradesh and its Border Areas in the Broader Context of the Peopling of India
