Past Achievements (1992-2010)

  • Developed an Electronic Dictionary of Modern Bengali. It contains nearly 60 thousand words with information of orthography, part-of-speech, meaning, synonyms, and usage of each entry word. The dictionary is used to develop an electronic Bengali-English bilingual dictionary and software for automatic correction of spelling errors of Bengali words.

  • Designed and developed a Written Bengali Corpus of one million words by way of collecting data from various printed documents published within 1991 and 1995. The corpus is merged with the TDIL Corpus (also designed and developed by me) for better representation of the modern Bengali written language.

  • Systematically defined Linguistic Rules for Automatic Processing of Bengali Verbs. The rules are implemented for developing a morphological processing system for Bengali verbs.

  • Collected all English Words from the Bengali Text Corpus. The entire lexical database is numerically and alphabetically sorted out and stored in electronic form to develop a dictionary of English words in Bengali.

  • Complied information about Frequency of Use of Bengali Letters, Graphemes, Allographs, Diacritics, and other Symbols from the Corpus. Information is used for developing software for Optical Character Recognition in Bengali.

  • Complied information about Frequency of Use of Words and Morphemes in the Bengali corpus. Information is used for designing automatic spelling checking and information retrieval system for Bengali.

  • Defined exhaustive set of Utterance Rules for Bengali Words. The rules are used for developing software for automatic text-to-speech conversion in Bengali.

  • Collected a large list of examples about the Use of Punctuation Marks in the Bengali corpus. The database is analysed to study the form and function of punctuation marks in the language. The information is used to develop tools for word processing, sentence parsing, and language teaching in Bengali.

  • Collected a large database of Bengali Words with Spelling Variations. The entire database is used to design automatic spelling checking system in Bengali.

  • Developed a Tagged Corpus of Hundred Thousand Words . Each word is tagged at the lexical level with lexico-syntactic information embedded in the function expressed in sentences. The database is used for morphological processing and sentence parsing in Bengali.

  • Collected a list of Polysemous Words with their Contexts of Occurrence from the Bengali corpus. Examples are analysed for designing systems for word sense disambiguation. Based on the information and analysis of the database, proposed AIMS Model for sense disambiguation of Bengali polysemous words.

  • Analysed linguistic and technical issues involved in developing system for Corpus-Based Machine Translation from English to Bengali in case of domain-specific and controlled texts.

  • Proposed Corpus Assisted Language Teaching method for teaching English to the Bengali learners. This model is effectively useful for both First Language Teaching and Second Language Teaching.

  • Proposed a model for Corpus-Based Dialect Study with reference to information and data obtained from dialect corpora. Is suited in Indian context where multiple dialects are on the verge of extinction. This model helps the nearly-extinct dialects to retain their identity and helps dialectologists to develop electronic dialect archives for future utilisation.

  • Developed a model for Usage-Based Grammar in Bengali. It extracts heavily from data and information of the modern Bengali text corpus. This model is suited for developing a modern Bengali grammar longed for ages.

  • Proposed and developed a model for teaching English as second language in West Bengal, India. The model is known as SHELL (Self Help English Language Learning) system, which works exceedingly well for the primary Bengali language learners who are learning Englsih without assistance of any kind from parents and teachers

Present Works (From 2010 ...)

SOME COMMENTS ON THE BOOK (DASH 2005) BY EXPERTS:

(a)"Corpus Linguistics and Language Technology by Dr. Niladri Sekhar Dash is one of the first of its kind. The very important field of corpus linguistics which is making statistical approaches to Natural Language Processing a reality has been dealt with admirable depth and breath in this book. The scholarly treatment or morphology and basics of corpus are valuable material for any language processing course. I have referred to this book in my course on Natural Language Processing and found the chapter on statistical analysis of corpus especially helpful. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in the corpus oriented treatment of computational linguistics" - Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharya, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Email: pb@cse.iitb.ac.in

(b) "I have read the book 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' and have found it extremely useful. I have recommended it to many NLP researchers and postgraduate students of Linguistics. It is a result of careful research, and indeed an important contribution to corpus and computational linguistics in the Indian context" - Prof. B.N. Patnaik, Former Professor of Linguistics and English, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and presently, Senior Fellow, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. Email: patnaik@iitk.ac.in

(c) "I have read the book entitled 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' (2005) and find it quite useful. Now and then, I, as well as my students, use it as a reference book for Natural Language Processing (NLP) works. It is a good contribution to the area of Corpus and Computational Linguistics in Indian context. Available works in English are too technical and hard to follow by Indian students. But its lucid and simple style induces interest in this green area. Pleased with this work, we thought it fit to be recommended as a text book in our University for MA (Applied Linguistics) and M. Phil. (Computational Linguistics) students. I expect similar works from Dr. Dash in future" - Prof. N. Deiva Sundaram, Director, Linguistic Studies Unit, Dept. of Tamil Language, University of Madras, Chennai, India. Email: ndsundaram@hotmail.com

(d) "I have read the book 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' with interest and found it quite useful. Now and then, I, as well as my students, use it as a reference book on Natural Language Processing. With its broad coverage and elaborate discussions, it is a good contribution to the area of corpus and computational linguistics in the Indian context" - Prof. Gautam Sengupta, Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, University of Hyderabad, India. Email: gsghyd@gmail.com

(e) "I have read 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' (2005) and found it extremely informative to fulfil the need of my students. I consider it as a very good reference book. I have translated the entire book into Tamil and give it as a reference material for my students. I have read the book several times as it has a wide coverage starting from earlier field work oriented corpus linguistics to the present day computer oriented corpus linguistics. It tells me the building of corpus, the characteristic features of corpus, conceptual classification of corpus, corpus analysis for mainstream linguistics, corpus for machine translation and so forth. It is extremely useful to me and is a good contribution to the area of corpus and computational linguistics in Indian context. It is the need of the day. I wish he will write books of such standard in future too" - Prof. S. Rajendran, Head, Dept. of Linguistics, Tamil University, Thanjavur, India. Email: raj_ushush@yahoo.com

(f) "The book 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' deals with corpus linguistics not only from a linguists’ viewpoint but also takes care of the language technology aspect as well. What impressed me most is the coverage of the book, its lucid style of writing and its handling of the language technology aspect. It is this area where the book is most useful. This book will certainly help us to develop human resources who will act as computational linguists in the truest sense of the term. I am currently using this book for teaching NLP to my postgraduate as well as my Ph.D. students" - Prof. Sivaji Bandyopadhyay, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. Email: sbandyopadhyay@cse.jdvu.ac.in

(g) "The book 'Corpus Linguistics and Language technology' written by Dr. Niladri Sekhar Dash is the first empirical research on Corpus Linguistics and Language Technology with their reference to Indian languages. The book deals with the basic issues like how to generate a written corpus, how to process it, and the procedures of corpus analysis. The chapter 'Morphological Processing' is very important and useful for the researchers working on corpus linguistics where he deals with the processing of both inflected and non-inflected words. The last two chapters 'Corpus in Linguistic Studies' and 'Corpus in Machine Translation' make the work overall complete. The most important fact is to say here that the book deals with Indian linguistic databases. The researchers from all the branches like phonetics, phonology, morphology, etc, including Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing will be beneficial from the work. The melodious and lucid language of the book drags the readers towards the content. In my opinion, this book makes valuable contribution on the area of Language Technology and Corpus Linguistics in Indian perspective. The book has all the resources and information to be used as a course and/or reference book at postgraduate levels in Indian universities and research institutions. I hope to find many more books of same potential from Dr. Dash in future for the benefit of Indian linguistics at large" - Dr. Kakali Mukhopadhyay, Senior research Officer (L), Office of the Registrar General, India, Language Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India.

(h) "Dear Niladri Sekhar Dash, I have read your book 'Corpus Linguistics and Language Technology' which I appreciate a lot. I think it is a standard work written mainly for people working in South Asia or/and on South Asian languages." Claus Peter Zoller, Institute for Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, Norway, Email: peter_zoller@yahoo.com and c.p.zoller@ikos.uio.no.
