About the Institute

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is devoted to the research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences. Founded by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata on 17th December, 1931, the institute gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. The Psychology Research Unit, a part of the Social Sciences Division of the Indian Statistical Institute, is continuing to conduct research on application of Statistics and Mathematics in explaining different psychological phenomena and psychological test development through different internal and external funding projects, sometimes in collaboration with scientists of other units of ISI/ or other organizations. Besides, the faculties of the unit are involved in teaching and training activities and are providing Ph.D. guidance to the research fellows. Scientists are also providing services in statistical or psychometric analysis of Psychological data.

Background

We do not currently have any credible information about the nature and extent of mortality from mental diseases, particularly those which can be cured if detected in time and treated properly. This results difficulty to make adequate planning about increase in life expectancy. The World Health Organization defines life expectancy as "the average number of years a person is expected to live on the basis of the current mortality rates and prevalence distribution of health states in a population". Many persons suffering from such mental diseases are denied of any treatment and simply allowed to die, The absence of a Mental Health Insurance Scheme is one among this sorry state of affairs. We need to develop details of a feasible Insurance Scheme. Psychology Research Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute conducted one symposium on Mental health care insurance in February, 2014 (http://www.isical.ac.in/~psy/ws/insurance.html) The symposium and the consecutive meeting with Insurance institutions identify life table analysis for the patients suffering from mental diseases.

Objectives of the Workshop

1.To identify data requirements and data sources on morbidity and mortality from mental diseases in order that a life contingency table can be developed in respect of currently affected individuals.
2.To develop some data base for costs of treatment in respect of some specified mental diseases viz. Depression, Schizophrenia, Manic Depressive Psychosis and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
3. These two will enable calculation of risks and insurance premium in a scheme of Health Insurance in respect of individuals suffering from mental health problems. (Attention should be paid to those who suffered only from mental diseases. Deaths from accidents and physical diseases primarily are to be excluded.)

Topics for discussion

1. Retrospective study on individuals who suffered from the mental diseases mentioned earlier and eventually succumbed with or without proper treatment.
2. Retrospective and on-going investigations on individuals suffering from these diseases and their health history since onset of the disease and future prognosis.
3. Analysis of data for working out survival probabilities upto different years of life beyond the age of onset. Other items of information as inputs into a comprehensive insurance scheme for such individuals.

Request for Speakers

Speaker will join at the panel discussion and share ideas on different issues to be explored for construction of data fields in life table construction.
Speakers are requested to submit own pen profile, title and summary (maximum 750 words)of presentation. At least 45 minutes are allocated for each speaker.
Senior Professors, Academicians and Professionals in the field of Population Sciences, Health insurance related Actuarial Sciences, Psychiatry, Health Sciences, Clinical Psychology, Rehabilitation Psychology, Psychological counseling and allied sciences will attend the workshop for discussion.

Support for out station Resource persons

Air fare (Air India and economic class) and local hospitality will be provided as per rules. The boarding pass and ticket details are required for reimbursement.
