Report of the North East Training Program held in ASU, ISI, Kolkata (2013-14)

The Applied Statistics Unit of ISI, Kolkata, had recently concluded the 5 day North East Training Program, on ‘Statistical Data Analysis’, for the period 25 – 29 November 2013, held in ASU Kolkata.

Ms. Kasturi Basu, was the Co-ordinator of the program. The programme was organized by her, with full co-operation from the team members, viz., Prof. Anup Dewanji, Prof. Mausumi Bose, Mrs. Roma Chaudhuri Sahu, Mr. Amiya Kumar Das, Mr. Sukumar Pramanik.

Objective of the five day North East Training Program, held in ASU, is to teach quantitative methods in Statistics and Data Analysis through interactive sessions using computers and software packages. Hands - on training on computer with statistical software is used to enrich the participants’ knowledge of application of Statistics and improve their proficiency for analyzing data arising from their research area and interpreting the results.

Topics covered : Descriptive Measures (Univariate and Bivariate), One Sample z – test and t - test, Two Sample and Paired t –tests. Test for proportions and Tests for Independence in Contingency Table. Tests for equality of Variances and Correlations. Linear and Multiple Regression. Binary Logistic Regression. One - Way and Two - Way ANOVA, etc.

Targeted participants were the Researchers in Biological Sciences pursuing PhD., in Colleges and Universities from all over North Eastern Region of India. The program was planned to accommodate 30 participants, but only 21 participants actually joined the course. Though all the selected participants had confirmed initially for joining the course, but, at the last moment a few had failed to join because of their personal reasons. Due to time constraints, replacement could not be taken place. Number of total participants joined : 21 , No. of Female : 11, No. of Male : 10. Most of the participants are from the subjects of Botany, Zoology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Forestry, Life Science, etc., from Guwahati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agricultural University, Cotton College, Manipur University, NERIST Arunachal Pradesh, etc.

All the topics covered were explained theoretically by the experienced teachers, interactive session with hands on training were done by Statistical Trainees of ASU. Students were evaluated by group wise presentation of the statistical model they were supposed to use in their research area. Most of the groups performed excellently. Evaluation was done by Prof. Shibdas Bandyopadhyay and Prof. Ashis Sengupta.

Teachers of this program include Prof. Bimal Kumar Roy, Prof. Mausumi Bose, Prof. Anup Dewanji, Prof. Debashis Sengupta, Prof. Ashis Semgupta, Prof. Debapriya Sengupta, Dr. Sumitra Purakayastha, Dr. Arnab Chakrabarty, Mrs. Roma Chaudhuri Sahu, Ms. Kasturi Basu.

The gracious presence of Prof. Pradiptya Bandyopadhyay, Dean of studies, was prevailed on both the day of Inaugural_and valedictory. Inaugural_programme was introduced by the Co-ordinator, Ms. Kasturi Basu, on 25.11.13. Inaugural_speech was delivered by Dean of Studies. Welcome to Participants was addressed by Prof.-In-Charge of ASD, Prof. Mausumi Bose. Objective of the North East Training Program in ASU, was explained by Head ASU, Prof. Anup Dewanji. All the participants had introduced themselves.

Director, Prof. Bimal Roy, had delivered the certificates to the participants on the day of Valedictory_on 29.11.13. Vote of Thanks was delivered by Ms. Kasturi Basu.

A film show on Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis was arranged in NAB1 on the Inaugural_day for the North East Participants. A visit to PCM archives in Amrapali and Dianosaurs in new Zeology auditorium was also arranged. A city tour arranged by ASU on 27.11.13, evening, was vividly enjoyed by the Participants.

ISI staff and North East participants had jointly presented a beautiful cultural programme after the Valedictory_on 29.11.13.
