B. Bhattacharya had schooling with the Raiganj Coronation Higher Secondary
School, which is located at Raiganj, a small town in the northern part of West
Bengal, India. He received the B.Sc. degree in physics from the Presidency
College, Calcutta, the B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees in radiophysics and electronics, and the Ph.D.
degree in computer science all from the University of
Calcutta. In 1984, he wrote his doctoral thesis on Design for
Testability in VLSI Circuits as an advisee of Prof. A. K. Choudhury at
the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics, Calcutta. He has had a long
membership with the Young Men’s Christian
Association (YMCA), Calcutta, at the Students’ Branch of which he had lived
through his formative years 1968 – 1985.
Since
1982, Dr. Bhattacharya has been on the faculty of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta,
where he became full professor in 1991. He held visiting positions at the
Department of Computer Science and
Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, and at the Fault-Tolerant
Computing Group, Institute of Informatics, University of Potsdam, Germany.
In 2005, he visited the CSE Dept.
of the Indian Institute of Technology
Kharagpur as VSNL Chair Professor. His research interest includes logic
synthesis and testing of VLSI/nano-scale circuits, physical design, digital
geometry, and computational nanoscience. He has published more than 200 research articles in
archival journals and in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and holds 9
United States patents.
Dr. Bhattacharya is a Member of the VLSI Society of India
(VSI), a Fellow of the Indian National Academy
of Engineering, a Fellow of the National
Academy of Sciences, India, and an IEEE
Fellow.
