I primarily work with PhD students though I also supervise
M.Tech (CS) students.
If you wish to work with me, then a good way to convince me is
to do well in one of my courses. That way, you will also get to
know whether I will be suitable for you.
While working with me, I expect research to be your primary
I do not offer short-term projects or student internships.
For non-ISI students:
As a general policy, I do not have the time to accept any kind of
supervisory role for non-ISI students.
Industry Interaction: (the
information here will keep on evolving)
In accordance with the policy directions of the Government
of India, the Indian Statistical Institute encourages interaction
with industry and other entities under the framework of Income
Generating Projects (IGP). Broadly speaking, two kinds of activities
are covered by this framework, namely, short-duration courses and
consultation/advisory roles. For interactions with me under the
framework of IGP, an organisation has to be both of the following:
Solvent: (a) Cost for a course of 10 to 50 hours for a maximum of 20
participants would be at the rate of INR 70000 per hour plus GST.
(b) Depending upon the topic, the cost could be higher. Topics for
which charges would be higher include those based on my research.
(c) Cost of consultation/advice would not be on a per hour basis. It
would depend upon the issue/problem at hand. Serious: (a) Before sending me an email (my preferred mode of
communication), perform all necessary background checks.
(b) I spend most of my time on research and do not have time for
protracted discussions. So, I would like to converge on something
concrete as soon as possible.
My main expertise is in Cryptology.
More generally, areas combining Computer Science with
Mathematics and/or Statistics are of interest to me.
I expect to be approached only when some amount of non-trivial
Mathematics is involved in the work.
Nature of involvement:
Short-duration courses could be to build background on topics
of practical interest or, could also be exploratory in nature on
emerging and innovative areas.
Consulation/advisory roles could be problem specific or, could
also be more general such as how to build and acquire expertise
in a specific area as well as providing guidance/direction on
possible markets and related product developments.
For each project, a project team will be formed with a
designated Principal Investigator to execute the project.
Depending on the nature of the project, other experts may be
involved in the work related to the project.
In addition to the cost of any course or consultation/advice,
applicable GST has to be paid by the organisation availing the
All payments are to be made to the Indian Statistical
Institute. Apart from the cost of executing the project, most of
the money will go to the institute as the institute's share,
institute's overhead and GST. The project team shares only a
fraction of the total money.
All courses will be held at the Indian Statistical Institute,
Kolkata. Meetings required for consultation/advisory work will
also be held at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. It
may be possible to have a few interactions using video
conferencing (VC). Note that I do not have much time for travel.
My preferred mode of communication is email. I read mails
seriously and thoroughly and expect to be reciprocated.
Telephonic conversations can be problematic for me since I would
not necessarily retain in my mind the full context of prior
discussions. If a telephonic discussion is considered necessary
then the time for such discussion needs to be scheduled
sufficiently ahead of time. A physical/VC meeting will be
meaningful only when there are concrete issues to be discussed.
I only do work that does not involve any confidentiality
Convince yourself about the acceptability of the material in
this section to your organisation before sending me an email.
Your initial email should mention your organisation's
agreeability to this material.
Within a few email exchanges we should be able to converge on
the deliverables and the cost. After this the official procedure
Your organisation has to submit a request for the particular
service on the official letterhead of your organisation. This
request has to be addressed to the Director of the Indian
Statistical Institute and mention prior discussions with me. The
letter should be sent to me.
I will forward the letter to the Director through the official
channel of the institute. Once the Director's approval is
obtained, you will obtain an official letter agreeing to provide
the requested service. This letter will provide the official
quotation of the cost of the service and mention other relevant
terms and conditions.
Your organisation has to convey the acceptance of the
quotation and also the acceptance of the terms and conditions on
the official letterhead of your organisation.
After receiving your acceptance, an invoice will be sent for
payment (which could be the first of a multi-part payment).
Work will start only after the cheque against the invoice is
received and encashed by the Indian Statistical Institute.
