The first decade of the 21st century has witnessed a rapid change in the field of research on Self-Archiving and Digital Repository with special reference to Open Access Initiative (OAI). This emerging field has excellent scope for exploration in fundamental research and tremendous application potential.

:: SCOPE ::

The Open Archive Initiative (OAI) is a world known useful tool for researchers and the academicians to get access to the database comprising resources that are intellectual outputs of a particular institution. As a part of this OAI, building of digital archives is an essential step for unrestricted and unlimited global dissemination of information.

Thus an institution needs to have its own mechanism for disseminating information on the research outputs and intellectual activities it undertakes. Hence, an Institutional Repository (IR) is a well-organized digital archive of an institution, with distinctive styles using IT applications that increases visibility and impact of its research outputs.

The workshop will consider different areas of self-archiving and different repository to ensure the preservation of the intellectual and research outputs of an Institution in digital format and to make available these Institutional resources through an efficient information network.

:: OBJECTIVE ::

An Institutional Repository is a database with a set of services to capture, store, index, preserve and redistribute scholarly research outputs of an institution in digital formats. All research outputs of an institution will be identified and accessible through its IR.

The benefits of the proposed IR are to:

Provide an enhanced visibility of its research outputs.

Increase their citation impact.

Promote in research work.

Preserve its collection in digitized format.

Provide open access.

The following steps are major milestones in developing an institutional repository:

To develop policies that govern the content acquisition, distribution and maintenance.

To Install hardware and software

To Consider different factors for building an IR, like -
-- Managing Intellectual Property Rights.
-- Design a database for both retrospective and current publications.
-- Digitize publications.
-- Assign metadata to each digitized items.
-- Upload the bibliographic description, metadata and digital files.
 

At the end of the workshop, the participants are expected to be well acquinted and confident in
developing open access institutional archives. Each participant will be provided with CD/DVD
comprising of presentations, lecture notes and relevant open source software.
