Discussion Meeting in Harmonic Analysis

Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata
Decmeber 27 - 29, 2011

The first discussion meeting on harmonic analysis was held in the University of Bombay, Kalina campus organized by Prof. M. G. Nadkarni in 1988. It started with a very small budget and around 25 participants. The idea was to have a meeting of all practitioners and students of harmonic analysis in the country where they would be able to present their work, discuss about new developments in the subject, their accessibilities and possibilities of pulling resources for training of students along these directions. This meeting was a great success and members present decided to have a meeting like this once every two years at different locations across the country. This year it is our turn to hold the twelfth discussion meeting at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, where we organized the meeting of 1998. The Indian Statistical Institute , it may be recalled for the benefit of younger people, has been a pioneer in research on harmonic analysis and related areas.

A novel feature of this meeting is to have a series of thematic lectures consisting of three or four lectures to be given by an expert in one of the promising fields. In fact, on occasions a discussion meeting has had more than one such series. In this meeting, the thematic talk series will be given by Prof. Malabika Pramanik, University of British Columbia. Although it has been the tradition of these meetings to have participants and speakers mainly from the country except for some glorious exceptions. One such is Prof. G. B. Folland from University of Washington who has been an inspiration for Indian harmonic analysts for long and has agreed to participate in this meeting. In these meetings, special care has also been taken to see that younger people like those who are just finishing or are about to finish their PhD thesis are able to present their work.
