CSRU is a part of the Computer and Communication Sciences Division (CCSD) of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. It is an integral component of R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security, a national hub for cryptographic requirements, cutting-edge research activities and indigenous capacity building in all relevant fields of study. The Unit aims at the promotion of interdisciplinary research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics towards furtherance of teaching, research as well as training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security.
Major activities of CSRU include teaching, training and research in Cryptology and Security. The Unit promotes sustained collaboration in focused research areas, and serves as a meeting point for eminent scholars. It also conducts internship and training programs targeted to produce a critical mass of experts to cater to the national and international requirements in this niche area.

The principles of research at CSRU are creativity, complementarity, flexibility, and collaboration. Although the research program of the Unit can be viewed as a single entity, it is conceptually divided into several broad sub-programs. The modular nature of this structure directs efforts to the most promising lines of research. The Unit is organized around small research groups, each of which represents an area of specialization relevant to solving the scientific and technical problems associated with Cryptology and Cyber Security.

CSRU has a strong teaching component as a route to disseminate specialized knowledge in the niche domain of Cryptology and Security. The faculty members at CSRU take part in the regular academic program at ISI Kolkata, and teaches courses at various levels of degree programs offered by the Institute. The faculty members of CSRU can supervise Masters students of any discipline of the Institute in the domain of Cryptology and Security. The faculty members of CSRU can supervise Doctoral students at the Institute towards a full-time Ph.D program in Cryptology and Security. The admission to the doctoral program is through the usual process of JRF entrance examination and interview process of the Institute. Under the regular activities of R C Bose Centre, the Unit offers a short-term (one semester) certificate course on the basics of Cryptology and Security for Government officers and scientists, who work in these areas. To earn the certificate, the participants of this course need to complete due coursework and/or work towards a major project and/or appear for end-of-term examinations (specific details and format may vary). The Unit also offers short-term courses on specialized topics related to Cryptology and Security to Government as well as private organizations, on need basis. These courses are generally offered in the form of three-day intensive workshops or week-long lecture series, either within the Institute campus or in the campus of the respective organizations. Every summer, under the regular activities of R C Bose Centre, the Unit offers a dedicated research internship program to undergraduate and post-graduate students from premier institutions of the country. R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security is a new centre of the Indian Statistical Institute, at Kolkata. It is named after the eminent Mathematician Professor Raj Chandra Bose, who had contributed significantly in the area of Mathematics and Statistics, now considered as foundations of Cryptology, Coding Theory and related disciplines.
The Centre aims at the promotion of interdisciplinary research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics towards furtherance of teaching, research as well as training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security. The Centre acts as a hub for all cryptographic requirements, cutting-edge research activities and technology development in relevant fields, in order to create a critical mass of researchers and experts to fulfill the growing demand in the national and international arena.
The goal of the R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security is primarily to foster fundamental as well as demand-driven research and applications in cryptology at Indian Statistical Institute, with following objectives. To provide direction and advice to various wings of Armed Forces, DRDO, Police Organisations and also financial institutions is another important aspect of the Centre. Capacity building at the national level, in the field of Cryptology and Security is another major objective of the Centre so as to make the country self-sufficient in this niche area.
