About CSRU

CSRU is a part of the Computer and Communication Sciences Division (CCSD) of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. It is an integral component of R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security, a national hub for cryptographic requirements, cutting-edge research activities and indigenous capacity building in all relevant fields of study. The Unit aims at the promotion of interdisciplinary research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics towards furtherance of teaching, research as well as training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security.

Major activities of CSRU include teaching, training and research in Cryptology and Security. The Unit promotes sustained collaboration in focused research areas, and serves as a meeting point for eminent scholars. It also conducts internship and training programs targeted to produce a critical mass of experts to cater to the national and international requirements in this niche area.

Computer and Communication Sciences Division

The research activities of the division primarily include: high performance computing, electronic design automation, mobile computing, algorithms, computational geometry, pattern analysis and recognition, machine learning, deep learning, brain modeling, computer vision, satellite image analysis, document analysis, handwriting recognition, natural language processing, information retrieval, quantum computing, cryptology and security, bioinformatics and computational biology, and medical image processing. In addition to the above areas, the division has also been working on some frontier areas such as library automation, knowledge organization, management & classification, and bibliometrics and hypertext & multimedia applications.


R. C. Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security

R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security is a new centre of the Indian Statistical Institute, at Kolkata. It is named after the eminent Mathematician Professor Raj Chandra Bose, who had contributed significantly in the area of Mathematics and Statistics, now considered as foundations of Cryptology, Coding Theory and related disciplines.

The Centre aims at the promotion of interdisciplinary research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics towards furtherance of teaching, research as well as training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security. The Centre acts as a hub for all cryptographic requirements, cutting-edge research activities and technology development in relevant fields, in order to create a critical mass of researchers and experts to fulfill the growing demand in the national and international arena.

The goal of the R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security is primarily to foster fundamental as well as demand-driven research and applications in cryptology at Indian Statistical Institute, with following objectives. To provide direction and advice to various wings of Armed Forces, DRDO, Police Organisations and also financial institutions is another important aspect of the Centre. Capacity building at the national level, in the field of Cryptology and Security is another major objective of the Centre so as to make the country self-sufficient in this niche area.
