free as in free speech

Free and Open Source Software

Free and open-source software (FOSS) is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to use, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. In this context, free refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software, rather than to the price of the software. The Free Software Foundation, an organization that advocates the free software model, suggests that, to understand the concept,

"One should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer." -- R. M. Stallman

FOSS group at ISI Kolkata

There has always been an undercurrent of free and open source software activity at the Indian Statistical Institute. The formation of this group during Software Freedom Day 2011 is a resurfacing of that enthusiasm in the form of a forum, where people from the Institute and beyond can share their ideas, experiences and issues related to FOSS. This website provides an array of online resources accessible by anyone interested to join the cause.
