I was born at Kolkata on 7th July, 1962. All my family members are (or have been) directly connected with academics. My father Dr. Somendranath Bose was a noted Tagore scholar, and was the Secretary/Director of Tagore Research Institute, Kalighat Park, Kolkata. My mother Dr. Manjula Bose was a Professor of Economics at Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
I studied in South Point School from grade I till my Higher Secondary Examination. I did my B.Sc. (Statistics Honours) from the Presidency College and my M. Stat. from the Indian Statistical Institute. My Ph.D. was from Pennsylvania State University in 1991.
I am married to Srabashi Basu, who is also a Ph.D. in Statistics from the Pennsylvania State University.
