OBJECTIVE

The centre will strive for becoming the AI hub in India. It will work on development of theories and methodologies of AI with a view to reaching out the benefits of AI to the most. A special emphasis will be given on explainable and sustainable AI. The CAIML will play a key role in helping our nation as well as the United Nations (UN) to achieve some of their major goals. The second and third sustainable development goals of the United Nations are: (i) End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture and (ii) Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In this context, it is also worth noting that NITI Aayog has proposed to focus on five sectors that are expected to benefit the most from AI in addressing needs. Of these five sectors, the top two are: i) Healthcare: increased access and affordability of quality healthcare, ii) Agriculture: enhanced farmers' income, increased farm productivity and reduction of wastage. To be consistent with the above missions and to help realize these goals, the top two theme areas chosen by the centre are: "Agriculture and Plant Biology" and "Healthcare and Biomedicine".
